How do you comprehend 'depression'?

We all have a share of negative experiences in our lives which leads to a dark phase where we feel low and demotivated, and where we question everything - sometimes even our own lives.

Well, frankly speaking I have been through those phases a number of times despite having a pretty clear idea about my life, its purpose and the things that I wanna do in my life.

It's a phase where your mind becomes irrational and you feel so low that nothing makes sense.

But as this phase passes by, things start to become clear and you become capable of motivating and inspiring your own self.

This is what I used to think depression looks like.

But after having some conversations with two people who've actually been through "depression", my perspective towards depression changed. I did some online researches as well and recently read a book (I've never been unhappier by Shaheen Bhatt) where the author shares her experiences and sheds some light on the mental illness named 'depression'.(Earlier I used depression as an interchangeable word for sadness).

I reached a conclusion that depression is quite severe than what I used to think. Those dark phases extend for a really long time (for months and years) and it has physical repercussions as well. Depression effects in a different way to different people. I can't fully understand the severity of depression because I've never experienced it in its true sense. The only thing I can relate to is "the phase". A phase where one feels so low that nothing makes sense - life, people, one's existence. Nothing.

Well, according to me talking about it is the way out - about what you feel, and searching why are you feeling that, answering the questions that builds up in your mind - having clarity about life and about yourself. Therapy and treatments do really help but I think the core healing lies in having an answer, which is convincing enough to you, about - why your life isn't futile.
